Key numbers on psoriasis
- 0.5 to 11.4% of adults worldwide are affected by psoriasis, and up to 1.4% of children.1
- 2.4 million people in France are estimated to be affected, with men and women equally represented.2
- In about 30% of cases, psoriasis is complicated by joint involvement in the limbs, fingers, or spine, referred to as psoriatic arthritis.2
- About one-third of cases appear before the age of 20.3
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune skin disease characterized by well-defined red plaques that are raised and covered with scales. At the cellular level, the disease is marked by excessive proliferation and abnormal differentiation of keratinocytes, along with chronic and exaggerated skin inflammation.3,4
It is a multifactorial disease triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.3,4
There are several types of psoriasis:3
- Plaque psoriasis, which is the most common form;
- Guttate psoriasis, characterized by numerous small, tear-shaped plaques, mainly observed in children and young adults;
- Psoriatic arthritis, where inflammation affects both the skin and joints;
- Pustular psoriasis, a rarer form that is often more resistant to treatment.
Diagnostic criteria and management
Psoriasis is almost always diagnosed following a clinical examination during which characteristic lesions are assessed.5
For management, topical treatments such as corticosteroids or phototherapy may be proposed. When psoriasis affects more than 10% of the body surface, an oral immunosuppressive therapy is recommended.3
In cases where these treatments are insufficient, several biotherapies have led to significant advances in the management of patients with psoriasis. Current available treatments belong to the following therapeutic classes: anti-TNFα, anti-IL12/IL23, anti-IL17, anti-IL23.3,6,7
